Chinese 301 Third-Level Mandarin

Pre-requisite:

Chinese 202 or consent of the instructor.  In order to register and remain in this course, you have to obtain a grade of C or higher in your Chn202 course.  Failing to observe this policy will result in being administratively removed from this class.

Goals & Objectives:

Students will gain listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in standard (Mandarin) Chinese, attaining approximately the Advanced-low level on the ACTFL/ETS  (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) proficiency scale.  Specifically, students will be able to achieve the following:

Listening: Able to understand main ideas and most details of connected discourse on a variety of topics beyond the immediacy of the situation.  These texts frequently involve description and narration such as interviews, short lectures on familiar topics and news items and reports primarily dealing with factual information.

Speaking: Able to handle a variety of communicative tasks (e.g. expressing one’s idea or defending one’s view point) with sufficient accuracy, clarity, and precision to convey the intended message without major misrepresentation or confusion.  Can participate actively in most informal and a limited number of formal conversations on activities related to school, home, and leisure activities and, to a lesser degree, those related to events of work, current, public, and personal interest or individual relevance.  When giving narrations and descriptions, can combine and link sentences into connected discourse of paragraph length.

Reading: Able to read somewhat longer articles of several paragraphs in length, particularly if presented with a clear underlying structure.  The article is predominantly in familiar sentence patterns.  Can get the main ideas and facts.  Comprehension derives not only from situational and subject matter knowledge but from increasing control of the language.  Texts at this level include descriptions and narrations such as simple short stories, personal correspondence, and social notices written for the general reader.

Writing: Able to meet most practical writing needs and limited social demands.  Can take notes in some detail on familiar topics and respond in writing to personal questions.  Can write simple letters, brief synopses and paraphrases, summaries of biographical data, work and school experience.

Text & Materials:

  • Textbook & Workbook: China Scene – An advanced Chinese Multimedia Course 《中国社会文化写实》, Hong Gang Jin, De Bao Xu, & James Hargett  (2007). Boston: Cheng & Tsui Company.
  • Audio: The audio files for China Scene are available on our computers in the PC and Mac Labs.  Click on AllUsers, then Language Audio and then on Chinese 301/302.  There is a folder labeled China Scene.  The audio files must be listened to in the lab as we do not have permission from the publisher to provide individual copies to students for use at home.
  • Feature Film: Eat Drink Man Woman (飲食男女) by An Lee.  Learning Chinese Language & Culture from Movies.
  • Hand-outs: To be distributed.

Student Responsibilities:

  1. Attendance: Attendance is mandatory.  Absences without valid reasons will affect your grade.  Anyone that is more than 15 minutes late will be regarded as absent.
  2. Class preparation and participation: Always come to class prepared for the day’s lesson.  All students are expected to participate actively in the day’s language practice.  Students’ class participation and performance will be evaluated.
  3. Homework and assignments: All homework and assignments must be turned in on the due day at the beginning of that day’s class.  Late homework and assignments will NOT be accepted even if they are submitted with new homework. You are expected to go to the language lab and practice reading new conversations aloud EVERYDAY.  Practice writing characters EVERYDAY!  No language can be acquired overnight.  You need to build up your Chinese language proficiency gradually through constant practice.
  4. Vocabulary quizzes (生词小考) and Unit tests (单元考试):  Every effort should be made to take quizzes and tests at the specified times.  If you know you must miss a class ahead of time, tell the teacher before that class.  Quizzes cannot be made up unless arrangements are made BEFORE being absent from class.  No one is allowed to make up a missed test without a valid, written excuse.

  5. Oral presentation (口语报告): Students will be assigned to give presentations on personal anecdotes or news/topics of interest.
  6. Compositions (作文): Students are required to write four compositions for the semester.  The compositions will be published at our class website.

You are reminded that each student’s background, interests, learning style, difficulties and goals are different.  Please be patient with each other and do not hesitate to see one of the teachers for extra help or explanations in certain areas.

Grading:

Grade points are based on the following:

1.   Attendance and Participation       10%
2.   Quizzes (10%) and Tests (10%)       20%
3.   Homework and Assignments           20%
4.   Oral presentations                                   5%
5.   Compositions                                          15%
6.   Midterm (5% plus oral 5%)                10%
7.Final (10% plus oral 10%):                 20%

Final grade:

94-100% = A 87-89% = B+ 77-79% =C+ 67-69% = D+
90-93% = A- 83-86% = B 73-76% = C 63-66% = D
80-82% = B- 70-72% = C- 60-62% = D-
Below 60%= F

Student conduct is governed by the Student Conduct Code (http://studentaffairs.manoa.hawaii.edu/policies/conduct_code/).  Misconduct, including plagiarism, will be referred to the Dean of Students for action.
